Honeycomb Blinds, Adelaide

If heat is the problem you’re trying to solve on the inside of the glass, honeycomb is the blind to look at. Every other internal blind is a single layer of fabric. Honeycomb is built as rows of cells that trap a pocket of still air between the room and the window — and still air is what insulation actually is.

How the cell works

Look at a honeycomb blind end-on and you see the structure: hexagonal cells running the width of the blind, each holding trapped air. That air is what slows heat moving in during summer and out during winter. It’s the same principle as double glazing, at a fraction of the cost and without replacing a window.

Single cell suits most rooms. Double cell adds a second row of pockets and more insulation again — worth it on west-facing rooms, bedrooms, and anywhere with a window that’s always the problem.

Where honeycomb earns its money

Bedrooms that are too hot to sleep in through summer

West-facing rooms you avoid from mid-afternoon

Single-glazed windows in older homes

Rooms where the air conditioner runs constantly and never quite wins

Large windows losing heat all winter

Top-down, bottom-up

Honeycomb blinds can be made to open from the top as well as the bottom. Lower the top and you get daylight in with full privacy below — which is the answer for a front room or a bathroom that faces the street. No other blind does this well.

Blockout or light filtering

Both are available with the same cell structure. Blockout for bedrooms, light filtering for living areas where you want the room bright but the glare gone.

What honeycomb blinds cost in Adelaide

More than a roller blind, less than a shutter — around $[X] to $[Y] for a standard bedroom window, supplied and installed. Against a summer of running the air conditioner harder, the sums are usually straightforward. I’ll quote the room, free.

Common questions

Are they worth the extra over a roller blind?

On a problem window, yes — that’s exactly what they’re for. On a hallway window that never gets sun, a roller blind is the sensible buy and I’ll tell you so.

Do they collect dust in the cells?

Less than people expect. A vacuum with a brush head, occasionally.

Can they be motorised?

Yes, including top-down bottom-up operation.
