Curtains, Adelaide

Blinds solve a problem. Curtains change a room. They soften hard surfaces, absorb sound, cover a window wall properly, and do more for how a room feels than anything else you can hang in it — which is why so many houses end up with both.

Sheers

Sheer curtains filter light and give you daytime privacy while keeping the room bright. They’re what makes a window look finished rather than furnished. Most people run sheers on their own in living areas, or layered over a blind on a track in bedrooms.

Blockout curtains

A blockout curtain with a decent lining and a pelmet or a wraparound track is the most effective way to darken a room, full stop. It also insulates: the still air between curtain and glass does real work in a room that gets too hot or too cold.

Wave fold or pinch pleat?

Wave fold (S-fold) hangs in even, continuous curves from a track. It’s the modern look, it stacks back tidily, and it suits large windows and contemporary homes.

Pinch pleat is the traditional heading, gathered at the top into pleats. It suits period homes, decorative rods and heavier fabrics.

I bring samples and we hold the fabric up in your light — curtain fabric looks like a different colour in a showroom, which is one of several reasons I don’t have one.

Layering curtains over blinds

The most common setup in a bedroom, and for good reason: a blockout roller or honeycomb blind for darkness and heat, sheers over the top for softness and daytime light. You get both without compromising either.

Pelmets

A pelmet closes the gap at the top of the curtain, which is where warm air escapes in winter and light leaks in summer. Worth doing if you want the curtain to actually perform rather than just look good.

What curtains cost in Adelaide

Fabric drives the price more than anything, and the range is wide. A standard bedroom window runs from around $[X], with tracks, linings and pelmets on top. I’ll measure and quote each window exactly, free.

Common questions

Can you re-use my existing tracks?

Sometimes. I’ll check them at the measure and tell you honestly — a new curtain on a tired track is a false economy.

Do you do the whole house?

Yes, and it’s worth doing at once — the fabrics tie together and you only pay for one install visit.
